Cancun 2007 was the first fair organised jointly by English UK, the British Council, UK Trade & Investment and VisitBritain. It was the first event of its kind to be held overseas.
20 English UK member centres and 20 study abroad agents from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela participated in the fair, which was held at the Hotel Presidente InterContinental Cancun Resort from 6-9 March 2007.
The programme consisted of an evening welcome reception, a morning of seminars and presentations, and then face-to-face business appointments. An excursion to an artisan and handicraft market was also arranged, giving delegates a change to experience the local area and get to know each other better.
Mr Clive Bruton, Director of the British Council in Mexico, and Mtro. Miguel Fernando Perez Cetina from the Ministry of Education in Quintana Roo joined delegates for the welcome reception and seminars. The British Council also organised a parallel session of agent training for counsellors and staff from throughout Latin America.
The relaxed resort setting gave educators and agents the opportunity to really get to know each other. They could engage formally through the programme of seminars and appointments, and informally outside the workshops. A number of participants, both educators and agents, said they appreciated the opportunity to talk to not only potential business associates, but colleagues as well.
Feedback received from English UK member centres was very positive - 'Very well organised and good choice of agents', 'All in all, very enjoyable - well done for making it work so well.'
Comments from agents were equally positive, praising both the style of the fair and the educators in attendance - 'I was very pleased with the educators I met, some offered more material than others but all of them explained their programmes clearly'. One agent remarked, 'I would say that atmosphere and friendliness was a highlight during this Fair, much better than others I have been to... Congratulations for the excellent work.'
“I like the small scale of the event and the timing. It meant that everyone could meet everyone, more or less...”
“Congratulations for the big effort! Thank you very much for inviting me.”
“I just to say that I had a wonderful time and that I look forward to meet you in London.”
